New story news

I have a new story out with Flame Tree Press!

My story ‘Dissolution of the Self on the Altar of Your Dreams: a Case Study’ is part of the Beyond & Within anthology ‘This Way Lies Madness’.

This story is closely linked to my scientific work and asks “but what if it went horribly wrong?” It’s a question I’ve heard many a PhD student ask themselves, as there is a particular anxiety to working so hard to push at the borders of human knowledge, not knowing if it will make a difference. If it will be enough. So if this story speaks to anything, it speaks, perhaps, to that impostor syndrome that many early stage scientists experience. And given the Mad Scientist trope, I think this story is especially at home in a horror anthology that aims to subvert some of the tired tropes around mental health within the genre.

For those worried about my own mental health: I’m well, things did not go horribly wrong. But it’s fun to speculate sometimes, isn’t it?

A few words of mine are also available at the publishers blog (link).

Dissolution of the Self on the Altar of Your Dreams: A Case Study, by yours truly, in B&W This Way Lies Madness, which can be ordered here, here, or wherever you buy books. You can also ask your library to order it.

A hardcover book, green with iridescent circles with sprayed edges in the same pattern. 'Beyond and Within' appears within the title frame in gold lettering, followed by the actual title written big: This Way Lies Madness. Stories from the edge of darkness, edited by the award-winning Lee Murray and Dave Jeffery. A small circle pictures a person grabbing their head.
